Absurd Fictional Film Brands
Film, but make it brand
On my fifth or sixth Inception rewatch, I had a spark during the opening sequence. After a dream heist goes awry, Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Leavitt) shouts, “Give him the the kick!” as Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio), asleep in a chair, unable to be roused, and perched above a full — presumabuly cold — bathtub, is tipped backwards by a shared dreamer. Slow motion conveys the slow passage of time while in a deep state of dreaming, and we witness Cobb’s sudden awakening as he is submerged into the water. “The Kick” sounded like the hot new energy drink ready for the market. Absurd Fictional Film Brands was born: two of my passions combined to create fictional brands that entertained me and offered a creative outlet.
I started with Inception and The Kick, a fictional energy drink brand that would embody the concept of getting dunked in cold water, backwards, while asleep: shocking, but refreshing.
Next up was cult classic Pulp Fiction. Mr. Wolf, the fixer who shows up to clean up a crime scene wearing a tuxedo, made perfect absurd brand fodder for my endeavor. I imagined Mr. Wolf running a cleaning service and offering his clients practical swag, like coffee cups.
I couldn’t engage in absurdity without including The Big Lebowski. The Dude’s sweater — stylish, cozy and casual at the same time — inspired Abide Knitwear. Somewhere between coastal grandmother and Pacific Northwest chill, Abide Knitwear is quality, fashion and comfort for everyday wear.
